A good friend of mine is Tony McCune. I met him through Stumble last year. Tony has a few interesting web sites, and one of them is called The Vanity of it All and it encourages readers to snap an image of unique vanity plates and send them in. Tony then allows folks to vote for the best.
Last week, Tony and I were talking and we decided that a vanity plate would be a terrific starting point for a story. Deciphering the plate and then developing a story for who the owner is, and why they chose that plate would make for some interesting reading.
So, here is what we are proposing:
- Head on over to The Vanity of it All and look at the plates in the April 09 poll.
- Pick a plate and write a 500 – 750 word story based on the plate – you can write a longer story if you like.
- Email your story to george@tumblemoose.com by 11pm EST on Friday, April 17th
- I’ll compile all of the stories and publish them as an e-book collection over at Smashwords. The ebook will be free and authors will be credited in the ebook.
- By submitting your story, you authorize its publication in an ebook format at Smashwords.
Thinking about the plates that are over at Tony’s site, this ought to be more fun than a barrel of moose.

This looks awesome, George. Look forward to an entry from me.

Isn’t that “a barrel of meece?”
Man, just when I thought it was safe to stick my head up again… now this! Gonna hafta put on the thinkin’ cap for this one, George!
Robert,
I’m not sure, but the conversation kinda went like this:
“Just saw a whole bunch of moose.”
“Herd.”
“Heard of what?”
“Herd of moose.”
“Of COURSE I’ve heard of moose – I just saw a whole bunch of ‘em!”
On that note…
Cheers
Hi Tracy,
Yeah, I posted the little bugger over there. I hope folks take advantage, it would be fun to see what our little chuckle-heads come up with!
George
Hey, looking forward to get my submission in tomorrow
Hey Steven,
That sounds great! I can’t wait to see what you come up with! I’m assuming we’ll get a good old fashioned, “That’s what she said!” in there!
George
I see all kinds of vanity plates here in LA, and I’m always wondering what they mean. Some are easy, and some aren’t.
I’ll have to check out the contest and see what it’s all about………….:)

This sounds great as I’ve always loved vanity plates — no time this week, alas. My dad got us all vanity plates in the ’70s and ’80s. My sister had the most interesting one with HOT TXN when she lived outside of Texas and my brother had GIG EM (Texas A&M slogan). The rest of us just had some variation of our name.
I just got my first one in years last year when the price of vanity plates dropped. Mine has my first name — it keeps me out of trouble knowing it’s an easy to remember plate — well, then again, so many misspell my name.

Lisa,
I’m glad you came by to check it out. It would be great to have something from you if you have the time. As a former Angelino, I remember there are some pretty spiffy ones in La-La land!
George
Meryl,
Thanks for coming by, and no worries about submitting – it’s the thought that counts!

Did you say ‘herd of moose’?
Vanity plates are most amusing indeed – there are several great resources/galleries online about them! Geek that I am, anything with RTFM is always a favorite….
