Thursday wrap up – Kontera

As it turns out, one of my fav stumbling buddies is associated with Kontera Ad Network.  She sent an email and asked if I would be willing to post about their services, specifically a promotional offer going on right now.

I spent a bit of time over at the Kontera site and I liked what I saw.  In fact I liked it so much I signed up as a publisher.

The process was silly-easy and if you’re a WP kind of person then there is a plug-in ready to go and a breeze to install  Blogspot users will be equally pleased with the set up.

Kontera in text contentlink advertising

This excerpt from their Publishers Overview page describes the concept:

“ContentLinks are contextually relevant ads and information units dynamically linked to keywords on a publisher’s web page.  The keyword is linked to the most relevant and highest paying text ad from among Kontera’s thousands of advertisers.”

I’m sure you’ve seen sites that use this service.  Certain words have a double underline and hovering over the word brings up a balloon with an ad related to that text.

The promotion

Publishers who join Kontera by January 15 will get a cash bonus with their first payment.  In other words, upon reaching $75 in earnings, Kontera will round up the first payment to $100.  This means the folks at Kontera are going to throw in an extra 25 bucks.  Not bad.

The key to getting this deal is that you must enter through this portal:

http://www.kontera.com/ads-for-site/become-a-kontera-publisher?sr=100414&BD=35&pr=1000

Just so we’re clear – this is not an affiliate link that gets me anything.  I’m just helping a friend with a concept I think may be viable for helping to monetize a blog.

Your thoughts

Anyone who signs up with this should give a shout and let us know what you think.  Also, do you have a Kontera success story to share?  I’d love to hear it.

Along the same lines...

I was looking at that earlier today and I’m curious to hear what sorts of results other people have had with it. My biggest fear is that readers will find the ads within the text intrusive. Although, in my own experience, if it’s a quality site, I don’t really notice the ads so much.

    Tracy,

My concern was the distraction as well. But then, like you, I remember going to sites that have a lot of the ol’ double underlines and it really is not too much of a distraction, as long as I keep my mouse under control!

Okay, I took the plunge and signed up and now I see that you could have made $25 off of me! DUDE! Go ahead and get thee the link that makes you money to have on hand in case anyone reading this would like to use it instead of being a chump like me. ;-p

I’m going to play with serving up the Kontera links only to guests on my forums and see if that is worth my while.

BTW, how long did it take for the ads to start showing?

    Tracy,

There I go again. Sheesh. The email I received said that for folks to receive the special promotion they need to use the particular link I included. I’ll check and see if I can’t change that after a week or so. There should be something available for the plug, no?

The text ads started showing up about 4 hours after I signed up.

It will be kinda fun to do this at the same time and compare notes.

I have to confess I really dislike the double underlines – especially as they often throw up so much nonsense. But good luck with the effort to monetise anyway.

    Joanna,

Thanks for commenting. I’ve been distracted by them as well. I’m going to see how it goes and watch my numbers rather close for a bit.

My biggest concern with the links is that you’re drawing visitors away from your site. How has your experience been so far?

    Hi Andrea,

That has been my concern too, to some extent. That and the whole distraction factor.

No complaints yet, but I’m not counting on that as a key indicator. I’m going to see what kind of results I get and watch my traffic a little extra close.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting.

    Cheers!
