In a previous post I mentioned how I gathered and researched information when I decided to get back into writing. When I first started my research on the web I “stumbled upon” Stumbleupon.com. Well, I was in heaven. What a great concept. I registered and set up my stumbling to include sites on writing, freelance writing, business, and other topics of interest for me including astronomy, nanotechnology and about 25 other categories.
It was awesome. I just kept the mouse pointer on the “stumble” button and clicked to my heart’s delight. In addition to finding great sites about writing and internet business, I ran across literally hundreds of sites to bookmark. I also learned that, just as I suspected, there is a lot of truly weird and bizarre stuff on the internet.
So, a couple of weeks ago, there I was, stumbling my way across the universe when an ominous page loaded up. “You Have Stumbled All of the Pages That Relate to Your Chosen Preferences.” I blinked, rubbed my eyes and scooted a little closer to the screen. “What? That can’t be right. Holy crap, I reached the end of the internet!” Could I have really hit every site? At first I just could not believe it. Then I started thinking about it. My daily routine consists of getting up at 5am, checking my email and then getting busy “stumbling”. Often these sessions lasted one or two hours and I would hit hundreds of sites. I’ve actually bookmarked so many things that on several occasions I’ve had to organize and then re-organize my bookmarks.
Disheartened, and a little frightened, I did as suggested and went to the preferences section and changed a bunch of my interest categories. I’m still able to stumble, but it’s just not the same.
I figure that in the near future I’ll change my categories back to the original interests and start stumbling those again. Maybe there will be one or two more sites to add to my bookmarks.
