While researching these writer’s retreats for women authors, I was amazed by the sheer number and apparent quality of the options available. This list represents a sampling of women writer’s retreats that I’ve reviewed by spending quite a bit of time on each website.
Writer’s retreats are a wonderful way to connect and embrace what makes being an author so special. Retreats present an opportunity to really make the grand leap into finishing your novel or connect with others so that you may realize that your struggles are very much the same ones that plague many other authors.
I hope you find these useful. I know for many folks a writer’s retreat is really pie-in-the-sky. That’s ok though, isn’t it? In order to fly, you must first dream. Take a break from your busy writing day and spend a little time here dreaming.
Listed in no particular order:
Hedgebrook – Located on Whidbey Island in Washington State. Certainly a gorgeous and peaceful setting.
Soapstone – A very unique cabin and setting near Portland, Oregon
Women, Creativity and the Journey of Soul, August 2009 – Wow. And that’s all I’m going to say about the setting.
Women at Ground Zero – Weekend Retreats to “Give Voice to Your Stories and Wings to Your Dreams” Located in Northern California.
Hmmm. Seems like we’re on a southern trek down the west coast, eh? Purely unintentional. Really.
Clarity Works – Ok, this one is on the east coast, in scenic Asheville, North Carolina.
Windbreak House – A ranch located in South Dakota.
Maumee Women’s Retreat, 2009 Better not delay on this one. It’s in early April. Located in Ohio
Woodhull Institute – A variety of locations in 2009 “An intensive non-fiction writing retreat for women”
The Writer’s Retreat in Sharpsburg, Georgia – This retreat has one of the most beautiful settings I came across.
Wild Women Writer’s Retreat – Mmm. Pretty certain the name says it all…
Oh, and it’s in Nova Scotia!
I’d like to ask a favor: If anyone attends one of these would you be interested in writing a review upon your return?
And finally, What retreats have you been to? Were they helpful? Would you go again?

George – yes, dream, so nice. Someone should create an online retreat!

Dee,
Yeah, that would be nice. I’m envisioning laptops, beaches…
George
Wow. They certainly have a knack for putting these in mouthwatering settings, don’t they? Very helpful post that got me dreaming of somewhere warmer and prettier! =)

Hi Kristin,
Nice to see you here. I’d love to do a retreat sometime. I especially think about Bermuda beaches when it’s the depths of winter here in Alaska.
By the way, how’s NaNoWriMo going?
George
Pie in the sky, indeed. Although, going to the local bed and breakfast may help me just as much. Then again, we live out in the country…
Anyhow…just an idea…if you are just looking to get away without distractions, you may want to look for a little cabin or bed and breakfast or even a nice hotel room (wherever you want to go) and book that…It could be much much cheaper. That’s what I need right now to write: A nice setting, a comfy chair, and NO distractions…well, nothing I *have* to get done (chores, kid, animals, husband). But, then everything else that has to get finished in the next couple of weeks would fall behind. Hah. Maybe I will make my own little retreat on a weekend…
Ashley,
That’s a great idea. I’m pretty fortunate in that there are a lot of little B&B type places near home – as you can imagine, an Alaskan B&B is not too busy during the winter and the off season rates go WAY down… Stayed at one a few weeks ago – only about twenty minutes from home but it may as well have been twenty light years…
George
Wow. I want to go to ALL of them!

Meleah,
Welcome, Twitter-er!
Good to see you here.
Yeah, they do look great. I just think how relaxing and productive it would be to hole up for a week with like-minded folks…
Cheers

Hi George,
I would so love to go on one of those retreats. For some reasons I’m still dreaming of a writer’s retreat in the Tuscany with red wine and plenty of baguette and cheese. LOL.
Maybe one day …
Hi Monika,
My only fear about a Tuscan retreat is me turning into a Tuscan Ex-Pat!
Cheers
