Powerful tools to help your writing

Just to give you a kind of fair warning, this is a little different take on the tools in your writer’s toolbelt.  Take what works for you, discard the rest.  All I would ask is a thoughtful moment on each tool with an internal question to yourself:  Would it hurt to give this a try?

  • Meditate – A twenty minute meditation each morning is a wonderful way to clear your mind.  A lot of times folks freak out at the mere mention of meditating.  They envision swamis in togas, lotus positions and incense.  Hmmm.  Could be.  In fact meditation could be whatever makes you feel the most relaxed, the most comfortable.  All you really need is a quiet place and a comfy chair.  There is no “wrong” way to meditate! Just close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a minute or two.  Work on clearing your mind of all thoughts.  The first few times you may fall asleep and that’s ok.  Soon your body will adapt and at the end of a twenty minute session you will open your eyes and feel centered and focused, even energized!
  • Visualization – You can combine this part with your meditation session if you like.  Visualizing your success can be a powerful and dramatic tool.  Olympic athletes have been doing this for years.  See yourself where you want to be, with your highest goals achieved.  Visualize how you feel, what it tastes, smells and looks like to have achieved your goal.  I’m not just talking about life changing monumental events either.  Do you have a blog post that is long overdue?  Use the visualization technique to see it through to completion.
  • The Law of Attraction – When I discovered the book, “The Secret” back in 2007, I had no idea what a profound effect it would have on my life.  The Secret is the Law of Attraction.  In the briefest of terms the law of attraction says that you receive into your life what you are putting out.  If you see yourself as abundant, beautiful and genius – and you really believe that – then those things are what you are going to attract into your life.  Your greatest personal success is in your hands.  You need to believe you are worthy of receiving it and you need to act as if you already have.  It’s not an easy thing to do at first ’cause you kinda feel like a fibber – but stick with it.  Do yourself a favor and get the book.  You’ll be glad you did.
  • Power-vs-Force – One of the most shockingly profound books I ever read.  Through the use of kinesiology, Dr. David Hawkins in Power vs. Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior
proves that each of us is an infallible truth detector and that the entire universe is connected.  Positive energy makes us strong and negative energy makes us weak.  He has developed a simple muscle test that anyone can use and apply.  I don’t have the room to go into the exact testing procedure here, but I think the book is worth an objective read.

As I suggested, take what you feel works best for you from this list.  This combination has worked very well for me and I think that your writing could benefit from being in a centered place where you have visualized your success in order to attract into your life exactly what you want.

My favorit part about the Movie was the Vision Board Part, but what about turning it into a Movie?

I am so happy I stumbled across this article. Meditation is one of the best ways to write better.

I tend to meditate every morning to clear my head and i’m usually much more productive throughout the day.

George, you really need to meet my friend MadFab, she’s promised she’ll start posting in the forums soon. I think you’d really have a ton in common with her.

Speaking of, she’s an actress as well as a writer and the other day we were talking about how experience on the stage doing theater and improv has been enormously helpful in other aspects of our lives. In my case, I’ll never be a great actress but having had those experiences has strengthened my creative muscles. I know there is a great overlap in acting and writing and I’d encourage any writer to explore the other creative arts.

Since my goal in 2009 is to be more “Why not?” than “hell naw” I will give these things a try although fair warning I might wind up being inspired to mock my own efforts. ;-p

I’m bookmarking this post. Tracy and I were actually discussing this earlier tonight and she thinks you and I should have a good long talk about Law of Attraction.

    it’s at http://www.thewritersmanifesto.com/blog/2008/09/30/it%E2%80%99s-a-bit-like-acting-i-suspect/

and MadFab, you bet. I’d be interested in your thoughts – shoot me an email and let’s get started!

I’ve never used meditation but have always thought about it. I am not sure if I can sit still long enough to meditate.

Ah, The Secret! An abundance of great philosophy there. I have listened to the book on cd no less than 100 times. I listen to it almost every day. I love it, however…I am very much an optimist but with enough of a realist thrown in for good measure.

I have studied and practiced positive thinking for 25 plus years. I am writing an eBook – The Secret Reality – which should be done by the end of January. As the title indicates, there is a good amount of reality with some personal responsibility thrown in.

@George – great minds do think alike. As a matter of fact I just took on a job for the very same reasons you mentioned in that post.

You and MadFab need to have the discussion on the boards so we can all participate! Sharing is caring!
