I cruised out to the ol’ mailbox last week and grabbed the OMG stack of mail that had built up for a bit. Sitting amongst the envelope treasures were the latest issues of The Writer, Writer’s Digest and a new magazine that I subscribed to called Parenting – School Years. All right! Some weekend reading material! There were surprises in all three.
The Writer
I love this writing magazine a lot. It has got so much useful information that I feel like I’m a better writer just for reading it. I continue to subscribe because I enjoy it so much.
So, towards the front of this issue there was an article titled, “6 Essentials of a Professional Web Site.” Since I just did a major redesign of Tumblemoose, the article naturally caught my eye. Then, I noticed the author. It was Monica Shaw. Naw, could it be the same one? I read the bio and sure enough the article was from Monica. Coolio! I’ve been visiting her site for over a year now. She co-owns Writers Residence which helps writers create their own online portfolios.
There’s something cool about seeing a person with whom you interact get published in a writing magazine. It’s kinda like touching greatness. Congrats, Monica!
Writer’s Digest
While I do enjoy WD for the most part, I subscribe to it out of obligation. It is a much better publication than it was several years ago and I think as a writer I need to keep an eye on what these folks have to say.
Having finished my initial read of “The Writer” , I settled in to this latest WD. Lo and behold, right there in a sidebar titled “Network” they had the WD Tweet of the month. It was a tweet from my good friend Iain Broome! The tweet links to a great article he did on ignoring the old adage telling writers to write, write, write. If you’ve not been to Write For Your Life then you are missing out. Iain has a great style and there is a lot to learn over there.
Parenting – School Years
At the outset, let me confess that I did not pay for this subscription. It was offered free through Amazon due to some purchases I’ve recently made.
I’ll be blunt: This magazine pissed me off. The proper title for this rag should be: “Mommying – All About Moms and Daughters. Dads need not apply” First things first. The articles contained within are just so much fluff. I did not garner a single molecule of useful information that would give me insight into “Parenting”. Good stuff in there about the latest skin products and fashion purses though.
This magazine is so blatantly sexist it just blows me away. Pictures and articles are all from a mom/daughter perspective. Hey, if that is what the magazine is about then fine but call it Moms and Daughters. Don’t try to pass it as an authority on Parenting. Nearly every mention of a male figure is from the standpoint of either:
A: They’re an idiot.
B: They’re the root cause of some problem.
As a single dad I am completely offended. I’m usually pretty easy going and don’t get offended easily but to intimate that a male influence is less important than a mommy one really gets my goat.
Although I knew what I would find, I turned to the publication page. Of the 44(!) various editors listed, care to guess how many of them are male? If you said “one” you’d be right. There may be one or two others but I was unable to tell: names like Sandy, Ridge, etc…
So, I’m emailing them to let them know to not kill any trees on my behalf, thank you very much.
Rant Summary: I don’t have a problem with the content. I do have a problem with them trying to disguise it as “Parenting”.
Nuff said.

As I was reading the article I thought the Parenting Magazine was going to have an article by an online friend too.
I’m not familiar with that publication but I don’t care for any parenting magazines. All they do is make me feel inadequate because I can’t make a school bus cake for the first day of school

Hi Kim,
I usually don’t read parenting magazines either, for the same reasons you mention. School Bus Cake? Yikes. Me and cake decorating do not get along.
Cheers
George
Hey George,
Thanks for this post. I love it when I see people I know in various walks of life (e.g., bloggers, teachers, etc.) in print. It’s lovely!
Also, I can’t stand those parenting magazines. For one, I’m a step-mom, so most of the articles don’t even come close to my experience AND my step kids are in their 20s! Plus, I never understand how I get on mailing list for things like Baby GAP. Not only do I despise GAP (and clothes shopping), but I have no babies (and never did!).
Sorry, that was kind of a rant – but you got me going. : )
I love to see what’s in your mailbox, George, it’s a cool thing.
Thanks!

Well, Hello there Lori!
The mini rant is ok. Kinda reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer takes all of his Pottery Barn catalogs back to them.
Yeah, it is so cool to see the names of people I hob-nob with online. Reminds me that there is a REAL world out there.
George
Parenting magazines make people feel inadequate so they will buy a bunch of overpriced crap.
Oh, I was flipping through a copy of Family Circle, I think, yesterday and their “tech expert” was giving the “scoop” on Twitter – including recommending that stupid Twitter only gadget. Gah.
Hey There, Ms. Tracy!
That’s an interesting take on the parenting mag. I would bet you are absolutely right. So far, Maddy seems to be pretty well adjusted – of course that may be in spite of dad influence
Rut-ro, the Twitter spiral continues!
Nice to see you again. Hope you and the fam have a wonderful holiday season. Let’s have a great 2010, k?
George
Gosh, George, that’s deceitful, eh?! I totally agree – if they generalized it to “parenting,” it totally should have been written (and photographed) accordingly.
Kudos to your friends for getting in the writing magazines, though. Awesome!

Hello, Michele!
Thanks for coming by (as always)
I think that is what got me more than anything. I mean, for the audience, it probably is something really great, but a little truth in advertising would be great.
Best of the holidays to you, Michele. Thank you so much for all of your support this past year.
George
Yeah, that’s understandable. I sure would hate to grab a magazine geared toward women, only to get home and crack it open and find out it was all about fishing and hunting! Blech!
Aw! Thanks so much, George. You’re the bestest!!!

If they’re smart (my hopes aren’t high), they will get your letter and then have you write some articles for them on being a dad. I would do that. But then, we both know I am smart!

Le J,
What a fantastico idea! I shall make it more of a crafty letter than a cranky letter.
Oh, we both know you’re smart. Now the whole world does too!
Cheers

Thanks for the update on The Writer and Writer’s Digest, George, I haven’t read either for awhile. But I’ll check them out now! Guess I’ll stay away from the Parenting mag, though.

Hi Charlotte,
I appreciate you coming by. The website for The Writer is really very good as well and gives a real flvor for the magazine.

Hi George,
First, I must say, your site is looking mighty fine. All your hard work is showing, and showing well. Great job!
I’ve never read parenting magazines either, but you make good points. I hope you’ll share the response you get when you write to them. As for seeing blogging buddies names in print, that’s pretty cool.
Have a very happy holiday George. I’m betting you have something magical up your sleeve for your daughter.
Happy 2010 and Happy Blogging, too.

Thanks for noticing the site! I finally got over my fear and installed the Headway theme, and now I’m in “tweak” mode.
My most sincere wish is for Happy Holidays to you and yours. 2010 will be a great blogging year for us all!

Hi George – I completely forgot about this over the holiday break. I must try and get hold of a copy and have a look-see!
