60mph billboard blog post

With thanks to Demian Farnworth over at CopyBlogger.  In his post today, he had the most profound statement of internet usage I’ve ever heard: “They go there to drive 60 miles per hour—and look at billboards.” Now you tell me if that’s not the most accurate description you’ve ever heard.

So in the interest of not causing an accident on the information superhighway, I’ll keep my billboard very succinct today.

Updates

  • I’m nothing if not flexible.  Set a goal for posting every day on TM.  Traffic has taken a dive that seems to correlate.  Must be TMI.  Back to 3 a week folks.
  • Part 2 of submitting a killer book proposal will be on Friday
  • I’ll have three more websites up and running by the weekend – stay tuned

And a gripe

A little off topic, but cathartic no less.

A had to attend a 3 hour training session yesterday.  I was soon reminded why I dread these things.

Here’s why:

  • Facilitator delayed start to accommodate a few latecomers.  Cardinal sin.  Do not punish those who made it on time for those too selfish to be prompt.
  • Lady across the table immediately slathered her hands with a rose scented skin lotion – had to stifle gags for nearly a half hour.  For the love of God, have some consideration.  Same goes for perfume and cologne!
  • Another attendant immediately gripes at the facilitator because his name tag is mis-spelled.  Then proceeds to gripe about the date and time being incorrect.  Please!  Mellow out!  Sheesh.

Finally

I need a little feedback, folks.  What kind of topics do you want to see here.  Remember TM is here to inspire all of you aspiring writers out there.  Let’s hear it!

Along the same lines...

Okay, let me be the first to say, yup, 60mph, the information superhighway is overloaded, create interesting billboards if you want anyone to stop!

Second, ditto to all of your pet peeves, nothing annoys me more than skipping dinner, being short with the family, tripping over myself, breaking speed limit laws to get somewhere on time and we wait for those who don’t make it on time. I DO NOT think so!

Third, personally, I would like to see posts about writing, (duh) inspiring, how to make money with your writing, freelancing, small projects, not necessarily novels, etc.

How’s that for feedback blogger buddy??

It’s definately true. That’s why headline have become so important in blogging. If that doesn’t catch them…they’re gone.

Because I’m new to this I’ve been trying to find like-minded people and similar blogs for writers. There seems to be a gap in the market for a, and I apologise for the terminology, a directory of writing blogs/sites. It’s something I’ve got my thinking cap on about at the moment, so some thoughts on that would be interesting (to me and me alone, perhaps!).

    Gennaro,

I work so hard on the headlines because I believe the same thing – get ‘em fast or you won’t get em.

    Iain,

Now that you mention it, I don’t know that I’ve seen a comprehensive list. I’ve ended up at a bunch just through stumbling and reviewing commentors at different blogs.

Let’s ask the community: Anyone know of a good one stop shop in terms of listing out writing specific blogs and sites?

    Good question.

    Hi George,

I’ve pulled over on the side of the road to drop my 2 cents off to ya. ;-)

Using my own site as an example…

Posting 3-4 times a week seems fairly optimal for me. Except when I am doing a series. My current series is drawing a lot of traffic and new subscribers. Maybe its time for you to start your own series of posts on a related topic…

Yeah, where is a comprehensive list of writing blogs?! I want it! Do it! haha. But seriously, my MEGA list of personal development blogs has 59 comments and over 2000 hits. My friend, it is well worth doing. ;-)

I look forward to more great stuff here George!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

    Jeremy,

Hey, thanks for pulling into a turn out and not blocking the flow of traffic.

Ok then, This is me working on putting it together. I’ll try and make it my Monday post.

Thanks, as always, for the feedback, bud.

    Off I go…

I’ve found that reducing the number of posts has worked better for me too – plus I couldn’t get up with 6/week.

Personally, I am getting really tired of the constant conversations about the weather. I mean if you live in Alaska that’s one thing but here in Philly it’s about 20 and people are acting like it’s the next Ice Age.

I don’t really have any post recommendations. I love reading your articles but don’t consider myself to be a writer.

Thanks for commenting, Kim. I appreciate the feedback. I’m not sure I’ll ever get a posting sched figured out. Just go with the wind, I guess.

Is it the Twitter weather convos getting you down? Or just the word on the street small talk?

After keeping up with your blog posts for a bit, I would consider you a writer. You articulate your ideas very well and your posts are an easy read, given your writing voice.

    Cheers

Weather conversations on Twitter and in the office are both annoying me today.

And thank you George! I really appreciate that :-) Maybe I will start writing my tragicomedy about all the crappy jobs I had when I was younger.

    Hi George,

Maybe every day is too often. I’ve thought about attempting it but feared burnout (for myself and my readers!). ;-)

As for topics? I seem to enjoy whatever you write here, so there. :-)

    Hi George,

I have to say, I personally think that if you have a writing blog, you should do your best to write posts about different aspects of writing. Most people that read writing blogs, mine included are looking for ways to make money from their writing, they want the nitty gritty, they want those tiny little secrets that we keep to ourselves, they want the truth also. I get so many emails from people asking me if it is really possible to make $100 per article, these people are spending their time searching for these jobs, and in the end they make nothing.

I started a post over on my blog listing the websites where you can bid on jobs. I am hoping that this will turn out to be a huge list that people can refer to and add to as time goes on.

I wanted to mention the Freelance Parent blog, I love these two, they are so honest and I really enjoy reading their posts. They are two female freelance writers and each month they post their monthly earnings. They bid for jobs on Guru and they have a very large following because of their honesty. They have only been freelancing 2 years and their story is great.

Ok, I think I have taken up enough space in your comments section :-) but yes I think more posts about writing and earning from writing will defintely get you the audience you are looking for.

    Hi Amanda,

That is some good food for thought. it also describes the difficulty in defining a niche such as writing. Does how to write SEO fit? Maybe. Does how to write ad copy that drives your adsense fit? Maybe. Does making money with your writing fit? Maybe.

See the problem? If I say this site is about inspiring writers then I could take a broad spectrum approach and say hey, all of these things fit because someone may become inspired. If I chose to make it more about inspiring those involved in the actual mechanics of writing and getting published then that takes us down a different road.

It’s hard to know the right direction. I think what I’ll do is kind of split the difference and post what I think fits, as it inspires me. From that standpoint I’d say to expect darn near anything.

Thanks for taking the time for the thoughtful comments.

BTW, did you get the stumble I sent about ghostwriting?

    Cheers

    George

    Hi George,

I see your point about how to narrow things down. I guess that is why my blog is a little easier given that it is about Ghostwriting. I would imagine though that as you said anything writing related that inspires you will work well for your blog.

I did get the stumble you sent about ghostwriting which I intend to put into a blog post too. I have just been so busy this week. Can’t belive it’s Friday already. I have been coaching my friend and working to some tight deadlines, so all in all my own personal stuff got left on the backburner this week. I need to get a good system going.
